A new work by choreographer AI Gao.
A "botanical study" following the step of nature.
A journey into the wild to study the poisonous, hallucinogenic and editable characteristics of fungus.
A retrospect on mankind, presenting the simplistic and eternal power of life.
A brief history of mushroom, written with dance, and starting with spores.
About the work
Mushroom, a naturalistic attempt in theatre, is setting out to display a simple but eternal vitality. Existing beyond the system of science and technology, algorithm and management, mental game and modern illusion, they are the shaman in the forest and the decomposer of nature. In small and exquisite structures, they transmit the intricacies of life signs across different times and spaces.
The work is a comprehensive research project based on curiosity over the various lifestyles of the "mushroom", varied characteristics of the community / individual, the unique features as a type of plant and a food comprising toxicity, imagery of illusion and other spiritual associations. With research on these items, the work aims to inspire views and visions on the intelligence, spirituality and emotions of human beings.
Mushroom will extract surrounding social texts with a special fieldwork method, and organize them into a form of theater performance. The purpose is to trigger the exchange of public information lying behind the topic—make attractive spores spread in more unknown fields.
